Hannover Theatre Guide – All You Need to Know

Hannover is the largest city in the German state of Lower Saxony. Perhaps best known for its universities, trade fairs, geocaches, international airport, and world-class zoo, it has a theatre scene that is worth mentioning as well. Although there does seem to be a trend of “feel good” theatre in the city, there’s also some interesting underground theatre that’s breaking the mold with new ideas.

Hannover Theatre Companies
This theatre is extremely active and hosts around 10 shows per week. The focus here is on variety shows, comedy, and high-quality entertainment. On top of that, the GOP Theatre regularly changes their program every couple of months, so there is always something new to see. The Leibniz Theatre prides itself on being the premiere “feel-good” theatre in Hannover. They focus on producing a variety of performances, including comedy, cabaret, music, and of course exciting theatrical performances.
The Neues Hannover Theatre has been creating theatre for 50 years, and is still going strong! Their focus is on entertaining the audience and ensuring that everyone goes home with a smile.
Schauspiel Hannover is the city’s leading spot for theatre. They have five impressive stages in which they present a variety of works and performances. With exciting performances throughout the year, you will be sure to find something that sparks your interest!
TAK has been offering high-quality political cabaret for the past 30 years. What makes the experience here even more special is that they are attached to a kitchen, so you can enjoy delicious food and thought-provoking theatre all in one night!
The variety at Theater am Aegi is astounding! Here you can find everything from musicals and concerts to comedy and dance performances. This theatre has been a big part of Hannover’s identity since the 1950s.
Theater an der Glocksee is more of an alternative theatre in that it offers pieces that are controversial, colorful, interactive, and experimental. Located behind a wall of graffiti, this theatre company is sure to give you a night to remember!
Theater in der List was created in a converted (ALDI) supermarket and now creates theatre for all generations. They enjoy producing theatre that tells honest stories and helps find some truth in life.
Hannover’s Theaterwerkstatt is unique in that it focuses on bringing other cultures into the performances. At the moment, they are focusing on Arabic-speaking countries. This theatre company has won both national and international prizes for their work.
Uhu Theater Hannover hosts a variety of performances, including theatre, music, and comedy specials. Not only is there a cozy theatre environment, but there is also an opportunity to enjoy great food at the location, making for a fun and well-rounded night out!
Hannover Children’s Theatre
This exciting and innovative children’s theatre company focuses on bringing a more genuine type of theatre to children of all ages. It is their belief that theatre should explore the “what if”. They release three new productions a year and also offer programs in theatre education.
This unique theatre company specializes in mobile theatre for the very young. With specialized performances designed for babies and toddlers who are 1+, the performances are short, intimate, interactive, and fun!
Hannover Theatre Festivals
This annual festival takes place in summer and alternates between Hannover and Braunschweig. It was established in 1990 and focuses on presenting a wide variety of theatrical offerings – from giant spectacles to multimedia installations.
Unique Theatre Offerings
Figurentheaterhaus has been Hannover’s only puppet theatre since 2007. This company focuses on creating immersive puppet worlds while bringing both classic and modern stories to life in a magical setting.
Hannover’s theatre museum is located in the above-mentioned Schauspielhaus and has been open to visitors for 25 years! Not only can you find regularly changing exhibitions here, but you can attend lectures, readings, and children’s theatre as well.
